Is it Safe to Eat Romaine Now?
Yes, Romaine lettuce is currently safe to eat.
What Consumers Should Know
Romaine lettuce was associated with an outbreak of E. coli in November 2019. Subsequent investigations conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) indicate this outbreak was actually three separate outbreaks linked to romaine lettuce caused by three different strains of E. coli O157:H7. On January 15, 2020 this outbreak was declared over by the FDA. The consumer advisory to avoid romaine lettuce from Salinas was lifted and there is no longer a need for consumers to avoid it.
No additional outbreaks or recalls involving romaine lettuce have been reported since then and romaine lettuce is considered safe to buy and consume from restaurants and stores.
